Power of the #

Posted on Updated on

Upon the lecture on Monday, I’ve realised the power of social media, and how it has rapidly turned into my source for news and updates. This could be due to the creation of the hash-tag (#) and how it has brought global discussions to the media’s attention. The hashtag allows people to easily “trend” a particular topic and allow discussion, with complete freedom.

Chris Messina, creator of the hashtag and former Google designer, says his primary goal was to establish a method for people to converse about topics with little effort on Twitter.

The hashtag has also been a mode of reconciliation, reflection and participation in events which have raised public awareness, such as #i’llridewithyou and memorials such as #911DAY

Great post, very relevant to us as a cohort and indeed a generation. The hashtag has revolutionised the collaboration of trending news stories. Even look at the way in which we use it for our own subject in class and promote it up on the big screen. I found this post very engaging, thanks for sharing this.

#quality post. Your example of the hashtag is well summarized and as it is world renowned your video provided the perfect amount of information. Also the #illridewithyou and #911 day provide a more personal aspect. Well done
